Irezumi is a traditional Japanese tattoo that appeared at the beginning of the 17th century in the criminal environment (in particular among the yakuza groups). In those days, the authorities similarly "branded" criminals. By drawing pictures on the bodies of prisoners, they deprived them of the opportunity to return to normal life.
The tattoo culture has taken root in the Yakuz. Typically, the yakuza have their bodies completely tattooed.
This tradition has been maintained for several centuries, and only today many yakuza have stopped covering their bodies with tattoos so as not to be left out of society.
